Semua biasa.
Begitu listrik mati, baru semua orang sadar betapa besar dependency-nya.
Itulah karakter utility.
Success terasa invisible.
Failure langsung viral.
Pada 2026, PT PLN (Persero) masih menjadi tulang punggung sistem ketenagalistrikan Indonesia.
Tetapi PLN sekarang jauh berbeda dari image lama sebagai company yang hanya membangkitkan, mengirim, dan menjual listrik.
Company sudah melakukan transformasi corporate.
Ada holding and subholding structure.
PLN Indonesia Power.
PLN Nusantara Power.
PLN Energi Primer Indonesia.
PLN Icon Plus.
Ada EV charging ecosystem.
Fiber and digital service.
Renewable expansion.
Energy storage.
Smart grid.
Green industrial demand.
Dan RUPTL 2025-2034 yang menjadi roadmap power system satu dekade.
PLN pada 2026 bukan cuma electricity seller.
Company sendiri mulai memakai language energy digital platform.
Itu ambition yang besar.
Dan juga risky kalau terlalu banyak jargon tanpa perubahan physical grid.
Akar PLN modern dimulai dari 1945
Setelah Proklamasi, pemerintah membentuk Jawatan Listrik dan Gas pada 27 Oktober 1945.
Tanggal 27 Oktober kemudian diperingati sebagai Hari Listrik Nasional.
Structure berubah beberapa kali.
1961 menjadi struktur perusahaan negara.
1965 dibentuk Perusahaan Listrik Negara.
1972 ditegaskan menjadi Perum PLN.
Lalu 1994, Perum PLN berubah menjadi PT PLN (Persero).
Perubahan badan hukum ini penting.
PLN tetap state-owned.
Tapi sebagai Persero, company punya corporate structure yang lebih commercial.
Dalam decades berikutnya, demand listrik Indonesia meledak.
Urbanization.
Industry.
Mall.
Telecommunication.
Air conditioning.
Digital economy.
Data center.
EV.
Semua menambah demand.
PLN harus terus build generation and grid.
Problem-nya power system tidak bisa menunggu.
Electricity supply and demand harus balance every second.
Too little generation, blackout.
Too much without flexible system, efficiency issue.
Grid is real-time machine.
Itu reason power utility sangat complex.
Transformasi holding-subholding mengubah siapa mengerjakan apa
PLN membangun structure holding and subholding agar business lebih specialized.
PLN Indonesia Power dan PLN Nusantara Power menangani generation business dengan scale besar.
PLN Energi Primer Indonesia atau PLN EPI fokus memastikan supply primary energy untuk pembangkit.
Coal.
Gas.
Fuel.
Biomass and related feedstock.
PLN Icon Plus menjadi digital-focused subholding dengan electricity-related digital ecosystem and broadband.
Holding PLN fokus pada system, transmission, distribution, retail, planning, capital allocation, and group orchestration.
Ini simplification, karena detail legal and operational masih complex.
Tapi principle-nya jelas.
Generation separated into focused companies.
Fuel procurement specialized.
Digital separated.
Parent becomes orchestrator.
Kenapa?
PLN punya asset enormous.
Pembangkit.
Transmission line.
Substation.
Distribution network.
Retail customer.
If everything managed directly by one bureaucracy, agility can suffer.
Subholding gives business unit clearer accountability.
But same warning as Pertamina.
More boxes in org chart do not guarantee efficiency.
Benefit harus terlihat di cost, reliability, speed, innovation, and value creation.
Indonesia Power and Nusantara Power menjadi generation giants
Dua subholding pembangkit mengelola large portfolio power plants.
Coal.
Gas.
Hydro.
Geothermal participation.
Renewable.
Hybrid.
Generation company harus focus on plant reliability.
Heat rate.
Availability.
Maintenance.
Fuel efficiency.
Emission.
Dispatch readiness.
Power plant yang sering trip membuat system operator stress.
One percent improvement availability on massive fleet can mean huge value.
Specialized generation company can optimize this.
But energy transition complicates job.
Existing coal plants masih harus berjalan.
Renewable must grow.
Flexible gas and storage needed.
Grid needs stability.
Old plant cannot simply be shut tomorrow without replacement.
Transition is sequencing problem.
PLN has to build new while still maintaining old.

Centralization can increase bargaining power and visibility.
But it also creates concentration risk.
If central planning wrong, impact broad.
Inventory management matters.
Coal stock day.
Gas availability.
Shipping.
Weather.
Port.
Rail.
Domestic market obligation.
All interact.
Electricity reliability begins before fuel reaches boiler.
PLN Icon Plus shows utility moving into digital
PLN Icon Plus historically grew from telecommunications and fiber assets associated with electricity network.
Current subholding role focuses on digital service.
Annual report 2024 noted more than one million internet customers.
This is interesting.
PLN owns physical network to many locations.
Pole.
Fiber.
Right of way.
Electricity customer base.
Digital service can leverage same infrastructure.
But consumer broadband is competitive.
Telkom.
Indosat ecosystem.
XL-related network.
Local ISP.
Fixed wireless.
Starlink.
Being state utility does not guarantee customer chooses internet product.
Service quality matters.
Latency.
Price.
Installation.
Complaint.
PLN must avoid assuming physical access automatically creates digital success.
Still, digital layer is strategic for grid.
Smart meter.
SCADA.
IoT.
Distributed energy.
EV charging.
Demand response.
AI forecasting.
Power utility future requires data network.
Icon Plus can be more important as infrastructure enabler than ordinary ISP.
RUPTL 2025-2034 is biggest roadmap current
Government and PLN launched RUPTL 2025-2034.
Total planned additional generation and storage around 69.5 GW over ten years.
About 76 percent, or around 52.9 GW, comes from renewable energy and storage.
Solar planned around 17.1 GW.
Hydro around 11.7 GW.
Wind around 7.2 GW.
Geothermal around 5.2 GW.
Bioenergy around 0.9 GW.
Nuclear around 0.5 GW.
Storage around 10.3 GW.
This is major change.
Old PLN growth heavily depended coal.
New roadmap pushes renewable much harder.
But planning is not delivery.
69.5 GW is not already built.
These are planned additions.
Project must reach financing.
Land.
Permit.
PPA.
Grid connection.
EPC.
Equipment.
COD.
Renewable pipeline often looks large on paper and slower in execution.
Archive must keep tense correct.
RUPTL is plan.
Actual capacity will accumulate year by year.
Solar changes grid economics
Solar is fastest-growing planned renewable component.
Why?
Construction can be faster.
Modular.
Indonesia has large solar resource.
Cost globally declined.
But solar is intermittent.
Cloud.
Night.
Peak mismatch.
This creates new grid problem.
Old system designed around large centralized plants.
Future system needs flexible generation, storage, stronger transmission, and digital control.
BESS becomes important.
Pumped storage.
Transmission interconnection.
Demand management.
Solar capacity without grid flexibility can cause curtailment.
So headline “17.1 GW solar” is only part story.
PLN must build system that can absorb it.
That is harder than installing panels.
EV ecosystem turns PLN into transportation energy player
PLN now manages growing SPKLU ecosystem.
During Ramadan and Idulfitri 2026, charging transactions increased more than four times compared with same period 2025.
From around 73 thousand to more than 303 thousand transactions in reported period.
Electricity consumption for EV charging also rose sharply.
This indicates EV adoption is beginning to affect utility operation.
Still small relative total electricity sales.
But growth rate high.
PLN now has new customer behavior.
Drivers need charging on toll road.
Fast charger.
Peak holiday demand.
App.
Payment.
Queue.
Reliability.
This is not traditional household electricity service.
If charger offline, driver stranded.
Customer expectation closer to fuel station.
PLN needs service operations, not just electrical connection.
SPKLU also creates opportunity.
More EV means more electricity sales.
Night charging can improve utilization if managed.
Smart charging can help grid.
But unmanaged fast charging can create local peak.
Again, digital control matters.
2026 system reliability remains central challenge
March 2026, ahead of Idulfitri, PLN said peak load was expected around 35 GW with available supply above 51 GW.
Reserve looked comfortable nationally.
But national reserve number can hide regional constraints.
Electricity cannot always move freely between islands.
Java surplus cannot instantly serve isolated eastern grid.
Transmission bottleneck matters.
Local plant outage matters.
Fuel supply matters.
Weather.
Natural disaster.
Network damage.
Indonesia geography makes PLN almost many utilities inside one company.
Jamali system huge and interconnected.
Small islands operate differently.
Remote grids rely diesel or hybrid.
Electrification challenge remains in isolated areas.
So “national capacity enough” does not automatically mean every village has reliable 24-hour service.
PLN must solve access, quality, and affordability simultaneously.
Electrifying agriculture and marine show new demand strategy
By end 2025, PLN reported more than 390 thousand customers using Electrifying Agriculture and Electrifying Marine programmes.
This is interesting because utility growth does not only come from new households.
PLN can convert productive activity from diesel or manual process to electricity.
Irrigation pump.
Agriculture processing.
Fishery.
Cold storage.
Marine operation.
If electricity cheaper and cleaner than diesel, customer gains productivity.
PLN gains sales.
This is demand creation.
Old utility waits customer consume.
Modern utility helps customer find electrification use case.
EV is same logic.
Induction stove.
Industrial electrification.
Data center.
Green industrial park.
Company has incentive to increase electricity share of energy consumption.
As grid gets cleaner, electrification also reduces emissions.
But if grid remains coal-heavy, benefit lower.
Transition and demand growth have to move together.
Financial performance is strong but subsidy and compensation matter
PLN is not normal commercial utility.
Tariff policy is heavily influenced government.
Some customer categories receive subsidy.
Government may provide compensation when tariff does not reflect economic cost under policy arrangement.
Therefore revenue structure must be understood with policy context.
Profit is not simply retail margin.
Fuel price.
Exchange rate.
Subsidy.
Compensation.
Government capital support.
All interact.
Semester I 2025, PLN reported revenue around Rp281.89 trillion and profit around Rp6.64 trillion.
Electricity sales around 155.62 TWh.
These figures show scale.
But evaluating PLN requires more than profit.
Reliability.
Electrification.
Affordability.
Transition.
Investment.
Debt.
All matter.
BUMN utility has public-service role.
Again, public service should not excuse inefficiency.
But pure private-utility benchmark can also miss mandate.

Current PLN board page in 2026 still lists Darmawan Prasodjo as President Director.
Board composition changed through shareholder decisions, including updates in 2025.
Management continuity matters because transformation narrative since 2020 and subholding structure have been strongly associated with same leadership era.
But corporate transformation cannot depend on one person.
System must become institutional.
If process only works because top leader pushes, sustainability weak.
PLN is too important to depend on personality.
Governance, SOP, data, talent, and accountability must carry transformation across management changes.
That is real institutional maturity.

So what changed at PLN?
Almost everything around electricity changed.
Customer is no longer passive meter.
Car can become load.
Roof can become generator.
Battery can become storage.
Factory wants green electricity.
Data center wants near-zero outage.
AI can forecast demand.
Solar can be built by private partner.
Grid must become flexible.
PLN can no longer act only as company that sends electrons one way from giant plant to house.
It must orchestrate system.
That is much harder.
Old PLN built poles and plants.
PLN 2026 must still do that, but also manage data, flexibility, carbon, private investment, charging, storage, and customer experience.
The lamp at home still looks the same.
Behind it, the electricity business is becoming almost unrecognizable.
